Fashion Week 2009: In the Make-Up Room

It felt like the good old days except everybody was MUCH nicer!!! LOL!!!

Yes, it’s true, the models from the 70s and 80s were VERY ‘mataray’ (diva-like) and it took me years to adjust to that kind of temperament and humor. But the top runway models of my day weren’t just ‘mataray’, they were also women who worked their butts off with astonishing professionalism and were the most loyal of friends. And here I was in the make-up room hanging out with these amazingly colorful women, listening to their crass jokes and funny stories being traded across the floor and roaring in laughter…  er…  well, cackling loudly, actually…

But the BEST thing about it all is that my lovely 19-year-old daughter Diandra Zach (who was going to make her runway debut with us senior models) got to see a ‘gentler’ version of what life was like for me when I was her age.

Here are some of the scenes in the make-up room at Fashion Week 2009…

Philippine Fashion Week 2009

Philippine Fashion Week 2009

Fashion model and make-up artist Lou Bunyi asked me in the make-up room how it felt to be modeling on the runway again after all these years. I told her that I felt so thrilled and so excited!!!

I also felt SO retro, like an Air Supply song on the radio. So MANY things were different…

Like for instance the WALKING STYLE. In our day we tried to walk as smoothly as possible – like ghosts gliding on the floor. And the choreography was so detailed that we often had 2 to 3 days’ worth of rehearsals. I EVEN kept notes so as not to forget all the steps. But the more ‘mathematically’ minded models like Desiree Verdadero and Ping Federis could go through the sequences once and perfectly recall every cue, turn and pose. Minus the pen and paper!

Today’s models bounce and flounce and totally ignore the beat of the song. Choreography is kept to a minimum and rehearsals are done in a snappy 2 or 3 hours. The girls don’t do as many turns as we did and the ‘mathematically’ challenged will have NO trouble with directions like: go forward. Pose. Go back. Exit.

I could easily get into THAT! Now if I could only get into those skinny pants they wear…

There were so many other differences I noticed – the models today don’t use pantyhose and they actually have make-up artists and hair dressers at their beck and call. We ‘senior’ models on the other hand did not have such benefits; pantyhose and self-beautification were realities we had to deal with day in and day out.ff

Here’s another funny one – models in the 70s and 80s (at least here in the Philippines) faithfully carried a pair of GOLD HEELS in their rehearsal bags; there seemed to be some tacit rule among everybody that GOLD HEELS looked good with ANY outfit… LOLOL! Now if the show was EXTRA SPECIAL, we’d be required to bring SILVER HEELS and maybe even BLACK ones.

Designers today are far more finicky – many of them supply the shoes (and accessories) that go with the outfit so the model doesn’t have to worry about all that. Shoe lovers in the audience will NOT be left wanting.

But of course the most exciting change is the arrival of the PLUS SIZE MODEL. In my time, you had to be a size 8 PERIOD if you wanted to be a mannequin. I was a 10 and was VERY lucky to be invited to do catwalk shows. I eventually developed some awesome Houdini moves and could squeeze into tiny outfits in the blink of an eye. Then there was my Anorexia/Bulimia season when I dropped down to 108 lbs and could wear any piece of cloth they threw at me. But of course THAT is another story.

So, with the arrival of the PLUS SIZE MODEL, things look hopeful for girls like me who love the catwalk but are NOT skinny.

At Fashion Week, ESAC launched it’s PLUS LINE and I was invited by Cesar Obrero to join the team of models to debut the clothes. After he saw some fashionista photos of my daughter Diandra Zach, he invited her as well!!! And together with 8 other models – Ping Federis, Desiree Verdadero, Lorna Legaspi, Duday Mandanas, Dana Narvadez, Gigi Bautista, Michelle B and her daughter – we presented ESAC+ last night at the SMX, Mall of Asia.

Ahhh…  I can’t tell you how good it feels to be able to have your cake and eat it the night before the show. It is HEAVEN!

Photography Show “Two Stops Over” Features Beauty Queens!

Time may be flying for this 80s beauty queen, but thankfully my star is not fading just yet! I spent the afternoon all prettied up in front of two kinds of cameras – a moving camera and several digital SLRs.

We were shooting the Beauty Queen episode of Two Stops Over, a new photography TV show hosted by Paco Guerrero on 2nd Avenue (the cable channel which I am continuity announcer for). In the midst of flashing bulbs and bright floor lights, I  spent a few minutes chatting with one of the producers, Troy Bernardo who also writes for Two Stops Over.

the blogging beauty queen with Two Stops Over writer and producer Troy Bernardo

Troy explains that Two Stops Over is actually a photography term that means – OVER-EXPOSED. They chose that title because the main goal of the program is to show things about thier subjects that are normally not seen on TV.  While viewers can get photography tips during the 30 minute weekly program, Troy Bernardo says Two Stops Over focuses more on the subjects and the journey of the photographer.  Troy and company present their guests in a different light with a challenge to viewers to change their perspective and the hope that thier lives will be transformed.

Joyce Ann Burton (Titular) Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1985 with Desiree Verdadero (right) 1984 Miss Universe 3rd Runner up

I was extra blessed because when I arrived at Pioneer Studios in Mandaluyong, the gorgeous Desiree Verdadero who crowned me in 1985, was there. She was sweet enough to wait for me – I love Desiree because she is one of the funniest beauty queens I have ever met. Never a dull moment when Desiree is around! We spent a few minutes catching up on life (her daughter is modeling now!) and then I was interviewed. Yes, I was interviewed in the light make-up I arrived in!!! Two Stops Over is true to it’s promise to over-expose it’s guests, LOLOL!

Me with the effervescent Alma Concepcion 1994 Bb. Pilipinas International and Top 10 finalist in Miss International 1994. This buxom babe was also once represented the Philippines in Miss Hawaiian Tropic.

After the interview, I went into make-up. And whom did I find there? None other than my annual seatmate at the Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant – the lovely Alma Concepcion who looked so fresh and dewy. Grabe, she is STILL so sexy and curvy! The one thing I REALLY like about Alma is that she is as warm as a stocking full of goodies on Christmas morning. When I first met her two years ago at Araneta Coliseum when Bianca Manalo won Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2009, Alma made me feel comfortable even if I felt like a stranger – it was my first time to watch the pageant again in 20 years or so! Our make-up room conversation deserves a blog post of it’s own so stay tuned for THAT!

My make-up artist Peter Urbi of Louis Philip Kee Salon - call him up at 09275384365 for all your make-up needs!

After make-up, it was time for the photo session! Wow, I felt like a beauty queen all over again with my gown, sash and crown. And while I stood under the glorious lights, I could only thank God that to this day I’m still cute enough for the lens. LOLOLOL!

Will post photos from the shoot once I get them!

Paco Guerrero, the host and photographer made me do lots of serious photos and some over-the-top excited ones too, which I preferred! But I wish I had Alma’s acting skills – Paco made her cry and the shots he took of that dramatic moment were stunning!  If I could just weep at the drop of a hat!

Alma and I getting direction from Two Stops Over host and photographer Paco Guerrero

If you love beauty queens and/or photography, you have to catch Two Stops Over The Beauty Queen Episode – tentatively set for Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, 7:30pm on 2nd Avenue the cable channel. Will post again when the date is final. Replays are Saturdays 10:30am.

Other beauty queens featured aside from me, Desiree Verdadero and Alma Concepcion are:

Darlene Carbungco, 2001 Miss Asia Pacific 4th Runner-up

Sandra Seifert, 2009 Miss Earth 1st Runner-up

5 amazing beauties from The Amazing Show

Boardwalk's One Big Show Poster - spotted all over C5 and Edsa! Have you seen it?

Just got back home from rehearsals of Boardwalk‘s “One Big Show” and I’m just feeling so blessed that I am still modeling in this season of my life. What’s even more exciting is that I am part of a VERY special segment of “One Big Show” featuring top beauty queens, models and actresses from the 70s, 80s and 90s all wearing Plus-Sized designs.

The star model of our segment is Miss Cherry Pie Picache, one of the most respected character actresses in Philippine cinema and one of the endorsers of Boardwalk. This is my first time to meet Cherry Pie Picache and I salute her for coming in to rehearse even if she had the flu!

“One Big Show” is a two-hour extravaganza of fashion and music as Boardwalk celebrates it’s 20th anniversary! It will be held at 5pm on June 18, 2011 at the Araneta Coliseum. Aside from the celebrity endorsers shown on the poster above, Boardwalk will have 100 models (aside from us Plus-Sized beauties!) wearing their best fashion items. It will be one BIG SHOW for sure!

The complete list of models in the Boardwalk Plus-Size segment are:

Cherry Pie Picache (former commercial model, character actress and now part of ABS-CBN management)

Desiree Verdadero (3rd Runner-up Miss Universe 1984),

Azenith Briones (who became a famous actress after winning Mutya ng Pilipinas Miss Photogenic 1975),

Alma Concepcion (actress and Bb. Pilipinas International 1994),

Joyce Ann Burton (that’s me… Miss Young Philippines 1981, Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1985, now RPN NewsWatch anchor),

Lyka Ugarte (actress, 1st Runner-Up Mutya ng Pilipinas 1983, and winner of “The Most Beautiful Girl in the Philippines” 1983),

Gem Padilla (Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1990 and now marathon runner),

Patty Betita (Bb. Pilipinas International 1991 and now Personality Development Consultant),

Lou Bunyi (Elite: Look of the Year winner in 1989, now a top make-up artist),

Deborah Sun (actress),

Ping Federis (former top fashion model now organic farmer),

and Isabelle Roces (top fashion model and now RPN NewsCap anchor).

Not in our segment, but present at rehearsals was Marina Benipayo (Bb. Pilipinas Maja International 1992 and top model) was at the rehearsals, but since she’s definitely NOT a plus-size, she’s in the jeans segment together with Maggie Wilson (Bb. Pilipinas World 2007).

Beauty Queens Gather for Mama Renee Salud’s Entieth Birthday!

We love you very much Mama Renee!

Last January 17, 2012, M Cafe found itself swarming with beauty after the women of Renee Salud decided to celebrate his Entieth Birthday there!

When I arrived, there were nearly 10 beauty queens ahead of me – Desiree Verdadero (who organized the whole affair), Gem Padilla, Lou Bunyi, Peachy Sacasas, Michelle Bautista, Maricar Mendoza, Jennifer Barrientos, Patti Betita and Tina Orleans.

Those who arrived later than me were my Bb. Pilipinas ’85 batchmate Izza Gonzales and Marina Benipayo who was accompanied by boyfriend Richard/Ricardo Cepeda – yes, the romance between the beauty queen and the Contrabida actor started on the set of Binondo Girl just about 2 months ago. They looked absolutely stunning together – both tall and striking, one dark and the other fair…   wishing the two a bright future together this 2012 and beyond!

Also in attendance, stylist Jay Lozada and a few others whose names escape me at the moment… if you recognize anyone in the photos that I did not list down, please leave a comment!

To Mama Renee Salud – Happy Birthday to you, you are such a blessing to all of us beauty queens;  the wonderful things I enjoy today are because you adopted me eons ago when I was just 14, trained me how to walk and talk, dressed me (and  gave me the occasional dressing-down too) and most importantly – turned the boyish me into the beauty queen me. I love you so very much and it blesses my heart to see you so bubbly and happy on your special day. Looking forward to more adventures with you! I love you Mama Renee Salud!

Invitation to the Queens' Reunion!

Invitation to the Queens’ Reunion!

Helloooo ABQ Readers! Just want to share with you photos of the beauties at the Bb. Pilipinas Queens’ Reunion last March 15, 2013 at Madame Stella Marquez Araneta’s home which is fondly called the “Bahay na Puti” or the White House. There are two or three beauty queens that I failed to identify, if you recognize them please leave a comment.

According to Stella Marquez Araneta, the Queens’ Reunion is the first-ever official gathering of all past (and present) Bb. Pilipinas beauty queen title-holders over the past 50 years outside of coronation nights.

It was my first time to see Madame Stella’s sprawling mansion which is grand but simple. An elegant home with a touch of history in it. We all gathered in the entertainment hall in front of the swimming pool and then had a ‘class picture’ at the grand staircase.

Anyway, I’ve got a gazillion photos to share with you and I’ll just let them tell you the story of what happened at the Queens’ Reunion!

PS: To eagle-eyed pageant historians out there, please leave a comment if you spot any mistakes in titles, years, names, spelling, etc. I also was not able to identify three beauty queens, please help!!

Scroll down to the very bottom of this post to see our “beauty queen class photo” at the grand staircase!

Bb. Pilipinas Queens’ Parade Rehearsal Photos!

Dear ABQ Friends:

After a full night’s rest, I can finally have the energy to upload some of the photos I took on my HTC 8x Phone Camera during the rehearsals for the Queen’s Parade last night.

Confession: it was so hard to focus on our blocking because we were so busy chatting, laughing and catching up with each other! I sure hope that the lady who was directing the parade did not get too exasperated with us. The Queens were saying backstage how patient she was because many of us were horsing around, even on stage, most especially me!

Anyway, coronation is tonight and I am a bundle of mixed emotions – overjoyed that I will be on stage with the most beautiful women in the Philippines and thrilled to find out who our winners will be!

And as we count the minutes down to Bb. Pilipinas 2013′s show time, enjoy these photos!

***note:  Not so familiar with some of the queens so if you can help me identify the ones I can’t, please leave a note in the comments section!

If you’re a solid Bb. Pilipinas pageant fan, then I’m sure you’ve seen photos of the Queens’ Red Carpet entrance and our glorious Parade! But I’m guessing there are not too many backstage photos out there (although I know that Alma Concepcion was uploading backstage shots on Instagram).

Anyway, here are a handful of photos I took while we were waiting backstage for the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 to start with the Parade of Queens…

Again, I will need help identifying a Queen or two, just leave a comment or a correction! Thanks for the help :)

Desiree Verdadero (far left) shows off lots of leg and her golden gladiator heels! She is the Queen with the most character! Next to her, Dianne Necio, Anna Igpit, Maggie Wilson, IzzaGonzales, Patti Betita, Selina Manalad and Sarah Jane Paez!

If you were there backstage at the start of the Bb. Pilipinas Gold 2013 beauty pageant, then you would have heard some 85 beauty queens whooping for joy! When the music started playing, we all started shouting and screaming even. The contestants, who were behind us, also began to shout (out of nervousness and excitement) as well. It was a beautiful moment to be with all my beauty queen sisters, watching the monitors backstage, hearing the audience roaring and clapping and thumping their feet. Then before I knew it, it was my turn to climb the stairs up onto the Bb. Pilipinas stage!

It was a memorable event that I will never EVER forget!

Once again, help me identify the Queens I am not familiar with or can’t see too well…

Here are individual shots of the beauty queens that I saw at the Red Carpet cocktails and backstage during the historic Bb. Pilipinas 50th anniversary beauty pageant. There are Queens in photos #4, #5 and #10 that I failed to identify…  I can’t seem to remember their names (senior moment?) If you know them, please leave a comment below.

I just want to take this moment to thank all of you who love and support our Filipina beauty queens. Thanks for the wild applause during the Queens Parade! The final set of queens from the 60s and 70s got the loudest applause but not as loud as the thunderous welcome Gloria Diaz received when she came out!

BTW, this is not a complete collection of Queens who paraded on stage during Bb. Pilipinas Gold but they are the ones that I saw and had the opportunity to photograph that night. The funniest thing was that I was SO busy taking photos of the Queens that I completely forgot to take a photo of myself so I had to ‘borrow’ OPMB Worldwide‘s Red Carpet shot of me.  To OPMB Worldwide, I cropped it so it would fit in my collage format, I hope it’s okay…

Mom, the Wind Beneath my Bb. Pilipinas Crown!

Me at age 5 (I think) with my Mom (isn't she just gorgeous). We were on a boat going to Sangley Point...

Toddler-me with my Mom (isn’t she just gorgeous?). We were on a boat going to Sangley Point…

Every time I run into friends who know me from my beauty queen days, they never fail to ask me, “How’s your Mom?”

Mom was my shadow then, but unlike regular shadows, she was feisty and talked a lot; anyone who met her would never forget her. Delia F. Burton is her name and she has been based in Honolulu for the past decade, far, faaar away from me. How I miss her so much!!!

Happy Mother’s Day Mom, I love you forever!!!

I never really wanted to become a beauty queen. That was the last thing on my mind when I was a teenager. I was boyish and walked like the famous movie pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow. Climbing trees and racing with boys was my idea of fun! Even when I got my first period (which depressed me, by the way), I still kept my rough and tough ways. My dream was to work in the world of men and become a top surgeon or an officer in the US Army just like my Dad, Col. Charles V. Burton. I even harbored dreams of becoming an Astronaut.

But Mom, she had other ideas. Somehow she saw showbiz potential in me and made sure to cultivate it by sending me to ballet, hula and modern jazz classes. Although I never got far with dance classes in terms of becoming professional, the classes taught me how to move gracefully so I could automatically switch between my gangly swagger and my graceful walk depending on what the situation called for.

MEETING MY FIRST MOVIE MOGUL: MANAY ICHU OF SAMPAGUITA FILMS

But my foray into showbiz didn’t really start until the early 80s when Sampaguita Films launched a huge campaign in search of actors for the movie Batch ’81. I was barely 13 years old when Mom sent in my photos – one whole body shot and a close-up (styling by Reggie Regalado). Amazingly, we received a callback from Sampaguita Films for an audition!

So we drove to the place which was located near Ortigas Avenue on one of the side streets; it turned out to be this huge piece of property that looked more like a garden or a forest. That’s where I met “Manay Ichu” or Marichu Vera-Perez Maceda, the daughter of Jose “Doc” Perez, owner of Sampaguita Films.

Her first reaction to me: “Oh, you’re really… YOUNG!”

If I remember correctly, this is one of the photos Mom sent to Sampaguita. Styling was by Reggie Regalado.

If I remember correctly, this is one of the photos Mom sent to Sampaguita. Styling was by Reggie Regalado.

I certainly was very young at the time. On the cusp of womanhood. Not ready to surrender my Jackstones and Chinese Garter and yet excited at the prospect of doing things that only the gown-ups did.

The audition turned out to be a disaster, although I don’t think I realized it then. The scene required me to rush down a grand flight of steps (inside the big mansion of Sampaguita Films) and then have a semi-dramatic discussion with my co-auditionee Charlie Ysmael (who eventually became a TV newscaster for RPN9). But I was only 13 or 14, with NO experience in acting whatsoever and no idea about college frats and violent hazing, which the movie Batch ’81 was all about. In the end, Manay Ichu felt that I was… well… too young for the film but she wanted to ‘save’ me for perhaps a future project.

To this day, I maintain that my audition was terrible but Mom… she tells a different story. In her eyes, I was fabulous and beautiful and should have won a Famas Award for it! It was that kind of faith – the one that could see my potential even if others and I couldn’t see it – that eventually propelled me to win Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1985.

But I am rushing ahead of myself. Let me backtrack a bit…

MEETING MOTHER LILY OF REGAL FILMS

After Sampaguita Films, I tried auditioning for Eat Bulaga (I don’t remember what for, but the audition was held at Horseshoe Drive in Quezon City). Nothing came out of that. Mom, who was getting bolder and bolder as the days went by, decided one day to just show up at the house of Mother Lily Monteverde, the famous owner of Regal Films. And guess what! We got an audience with her! Mom’s persistence paid off and it seemed like Mother Lily liked me enough to introduce me to some of the directors and actors in her fold.

After a couple meetings, Mother Lily offered us a 10-film contract starting with, “Bata pa si ‘Sabel,” a coming-of-age movie about a young girl with two boys in her life . But Mom had a major, major problem with it – I had to do kissing scenes and bed scenes; something she did not agree with. Mom stepped on the brakes and the movie went to Snookie Serna who starred across Albert Martinez and the late Joel Alano who tragically died at age 21 because of a heart attack (of all things!)

That girl on the Hammock (Snooky Serna) would've been me if I had signed that Regal Films contract!

But Mother Lily was serious about me. Serious enough to include me in a few press releases and in one of Regal Films’ promotional tours. I was introduced as an up-and-coming Regal Baby. So even if there was a stalemate between Mom and Mother Lily, it looked like my movie career was underway.

Or so I thought.

My ‘career’ took an unexpected twist at the presscon of movie “Blue Jeans” which starred Dina Bonnevie. Mom and I were there on invitation of Mother Lily and after the presentation, one of the press people in attendance told her this, “Your daughter looks more like a beauty queen than an actress, you should bring her to Renee Salud.”

That encounter opened a whole new level of excitement in my Mom who suddenly realized that maybe this was what she was looking for! So she got the phone number of Renee and the following day called to set an appointment…

MEETING MAMA RENEE

The Renee Salud Design shop on E. Rodriguez Blvd was small but busy. Mom and I were quietly asked to sit in the receiving room to wait and meet this “Mama Renee” character. There were two mannequins in the store window wearing Filipiniana-inspired outfits and I could hear sewing machines starting and stopping in the backroom.

After a 15 minute wait, in swept Mama Renee Salud – who turned out to be, indeed, a character. Flamboyant does not even begin to describe him! His hands never stopped moving and neither did his mouth. Renee flipped back and forth between gushing over me and telling me that I needed to lose weight and get a tan. It seemed like he had already taken me into his fold, even before Mom had a chance to say yes.

Funny as it seemed, that meeting proved to be pivotal in my life. Little did I know that stepping into his shop would alter my entire future.

MISS YOUNG PHILIPPINES 1981

Mama Renee did not wait long. In a few months, he sent me on my first pageant experience. I was just 14 years old when I was accepted as one of 10 contestants in the Miss Young Philippines 1981 beauty pageant that was held at the Peninsula Hotel in Makati. And because I was very boyish to the point of brutishness, I did not really know how to mingle with the other contestants and ended up treating them all like boys. I would push them, pull their hair or tease them mercilessly. My behavior (which was innocent playfulness on my part) was misunderstood and resulted in a bull-session the night before coronation.

Basically, they ganged up on me. At least that’s how it felt the time. I felt so hurt by the things they said about me but I hid my feelings and pretended that I was okay. We ended the bull-session with my promise to change. Now that I’m little older, I’ve come to realize that the 9 girls just wanted me to change for the better. They wanted me to become more ‘lady-like’.

Me and my court of beauties - Miss Young Philippines batch 1981!

Me and my court of beauties – Miss Young Philippines batch 1981!

The following night I ended up winning the crown. Honestly, I didn’t know I would win but I did want to win so badly mostly because I am, by nature, very competitive and take all kinds of games, even Patintero, very seriously. So there I was on stage, overjoyed, and at that moment of my victory, I forgot all my promises to change.

In the meantime, my Mom was over the moon! She had been secretly visiting Baclaran Church, praying and walking on her knees til they bled; it was her way of gaining favor with God to make me win. Thankfully, we now both know that the whole ‘penance’ thing was unnecessary; God favors those whom He shall. But I still will never forget the sight of the open wounds on her knees and what they meant to her at the time.

CONFESSION OF A BEAUTY QUEEN #1: I WAS UNDER-AGED

I might as well confess it now and come clean. I WAS under-aged when I won.

The manager of my 1st-Runner up sued and the issue was all over the newspapers. Some reports even said I was stripped of my title but I continued on with my duties as Miss Young Philippines 1981 and went on to represent the Philippines in the Miss Young International 1981 beauty pageant where I placed as a semi-finalist.

My 1st Runner-up Lily Andrews on the left...

My 1st Runner-up Lily Andrews on the left…

Well, I guess now is the best time to say sorry to pageant fans and to all my co-contestants specially my 1st Runner-up Lily Andrews. If I could turn the clock back and do it all over again, I would have not joined and would have waited until I reached the right age.  I realize that now. But its water under the bridge. All I can do is offer this confession and say that I’m sorry.

NEXT STOP: BB PILIPINAS 1985

Mama Renee wasn’t done with me yet. He said that the Miss Young Philippines was just the first step. The main event was the Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant and the goal was either the Universe or the International title. Training for the Bb. Pilipinas involved doing lots of fashion shows and going to lots of parties. I continued dancing

With Pitoy Moreno Model Lito Gruet. We were the first models of Maria Clara Sangria!

With Pitoy Moreno Model Lito Gruet. We were the first models of Maria Clara Sangria!

(Filipiniana Dance) for the Manila Metropolitan Theater, better known as “The Met” and often worked as a background villager/dancer for Zarzuelas and other musicals presentations at the historical venue. Dancing helped me be graceful and control my severe stage fright.

At one point, I was invited by Pitoy Moreno to become a fashion model for Malacanang Palace. My batch of models included Bessie Badilla, Ana Francisco, Crispy Santamaria (daughter of Pianist Ingrid Santamaria), Roi Vinzon (the actor), Lito Gruet, the late Chat Silayan and Melanie Marquez who was THE favorite of Madame Imelda Marcos.

We basically had one fashion show presentation – it was the guests who changed. Every top foreign dignitary who would visit the Marcoses in the Philippines would be feted with our show. At the end of the program, Imelda Marcos would take the microphone and sing “Feelings” and/or “Dahil Sa ‘Yo” to her guest. The most memorable shows we did were for Indira Gandhi at the PICC and for the foreign actors and directors who came to Philippines for the 1st Manila International Film Fest in 1982. The main show, which was held in Intramuros, was grand and fabulous! The most famous guests to the MIFF that I remember were actors Franco Nero, Ben Kingsley and George Hamilton.

Take note that all throughout my career, Mom was with me. At every rehearsal, show, TV guesting and party, she was by my side, acting like the quintessential stage mom, keeping one eye on her daughter and ten eyes on the wolves. We had an inside joke that Mom was like my bulldog; nobody could get near me when she was around. While I chafed at her constant presence (having her around made it hard to make friends), I knew it was for the best. I was so young and gullible but with my spitfire Mom, no one could mess around with me.

Mom was always by my side! Even in newspaper articles, aahaha!

RUNNING AWAY FROM HOME AND THE CROWN

When I won Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1985...

When I won Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1985…

When I turned 18, Mom and I had a big fight – she wanted me to put college on hold so I could join Bb. Pilipinas. I tried to bargain – could I finish two years of college and THEN join the pageant? The answer was no. I tried running away from home but Mom found me within days (such was her network) and I was forced to join the pageant. I had no choice but to join it. But even if I was unhappy to be there, I went for the win, giving it my all. As I said, I am competitive by nature and hate to lose. I went home on coronation night with the Bb. Pilipinas 1985 crown on my head and my face splashed on all the newspapers the next day.

My career was made. As far as Mom and Mama Renee were concerned, I had arrived.

CONFESSIONS OF A BEAUTY QUEEN #2: I WAS NOT A FILIPINO CITIZEN

Alas, my second victory proved to be another problematic one! But since there were no complainants, it did not make it into the news. The problem was, I was a US Citizen and the requirement for Miss Universe was that contestants had to be citizens of the country they were representing. I ended up competing in Miami, Florida anyway. Miss Puerto Rico, Deborah Carthy Deu won while my best friend, Miss USA Laura Martinez Herring (who is now a Hollywood actress) entered the Top 10. I do not know if my citizenship affected my chances at the crown but I left the stage broken-hearted, wishing I had done better.

Im on the far right... this was taken during the Miss Universe 1985 competition...

Im on the far right… this was taken during the Miss Universe 1985 competition…

I do have a consolation. A highly respected pageant website included me in their list (made in 2002) of 50 Most Beautiful Non-Finalists in Miss Universe. When I discovered that list, I couldn’t help but smile til my lips met the back of my head. There were people who still cared about me. (Does anyone have the link to that list? Please leave it in the comments section, I can’t seem to find the site…)

CONFESSION OF A BEAUTY QUEEN #3: BITTERNESS AT MOM

A few months after the Miss Universe pageant I rebelled against my parents and left home again. I wanted to lead my life the way I wanted to. And so I did. I escaped from Mom’s authority and enjoyed my freedom but it came at quite a price. My career, which started so well, never really took off and then started to wane.

Here are the reasons why I messed up:

Me w Direk Johnny Manahan who was my director on Chika Chika Chicks! This photo was taken during the rehearsals for the Queens Parade during Bb. Pilipinas Gold!

Me w Direk Johnny Manahan who was my director on Chika Chika Chicks! This photo was taken during the rehearsals for the Queens Parade during Bb. Pilipinas Gold!

First, I didn’t know how to manage myself as a talent. Example – In the 80s, when I got a permanent slot on Chika Chika Chicks (the sitcom that used to be called Chicks to Chicks which also starred beauty queens Lorraine Schuck and Bong Dimayacyac) I would come to work late; like two hours late. My reason? Since the main stars were always late, I could be late too.

The nerve of me, huh?

Second, I made lots of choices based on emotions and not wisdom. I only did what I felt like doing. So instead of investing in my career, I just enjoyed my money, spent time with friends, went to parties and just had a good time, all the time.

Third, I still had trouble getting along with people. And I couldn’t handle criticism from directors and choreographers. I took things too personally and felt defeated by their correction of me even if outside I looked confident. I expected praise because anything less meant I wasn’t good enough. I held myself to an impossible standard at every fashion show or TV job instead of turning them into learning experiences.

All three made a recipe for disaster. While no real disaster happened, NOTHING was happening to my career, which is I guess, some kind of a disaster anyway. My career was going nowhere. I was floating like a jellyfish in a cold ocean with not a single muscle to move me in the right direction. I began to unjustly blame Mom for bringing me into the world of showbiz and grew very bitter.

It took more than 15 years and the preaching of one pastor before I understood how bitterness, and the resulting unforgiveness I had for her, were dragging me down. I forget who the Pastor was, but he was from Victory Christian Fellowship in Pasig. The teaching was centered on the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant in Matthew 18:21-35. He outlined its symptoms and then prescribed the pill of forgiveness. I cried because I suddenly realized that I was a pitiable victim of bitterness.

It was then that I regretted leaving Mom. If I had not left home, my career would have blossomed, for sure! Mom was a such great manager. But God is wonderful because he used the bad that I did and turned it into a lesson for me to learn. I cannot complain with the blessings I have today, in spite of the bad behavior I had in the past.

Mom posing next to her collection my beauty queen photos and memorabilia...

Mom posing next to her collection my beauty queen photos and memorabilia…

So I took action. I sat down with my journal and wrote down two names – my Mom’s and another person whom I just could not forgive. I sat there and prayed saying: “I cannot forgive you on my own strength but I can forgive you through Jesus Christ.”

And then I enumerated the reasons why I was hurt by them and forgave them for each one. I also wrote down a goal: Not to say anything bad about them. In my Mom’s case, I also decided that each time someone asked me about her, I would say at least one good thing about her. I prayed the prayer everyday and stayed faithful to my goal. In a few weeks, I could feel the seed of forgiveness planted in my heart, growing tendrils of peace, giving me life and releasing me from the burden of bitterness.

RECONCILIATION WITH MOM

Although things are not perfect between Mom and I (we still argue and fight sometimes), it is now easy to say, “I love you!” Those words were SO INCREDIBLY hard to say to her during my years of bitterness. In fact, I never said them for a loooong time and neither did Mom. But I clearly remember the first time I said those words again, as an adult – it was in the back of an airport bus that had just picked us up from our plane and was taking us to the Ninoy Aquino International Terminal. A strong feeling of love suddenly gripped me and I just had to lean over and hug her and say, “I love you, Mom!” She hugged me back so tightly saying that she loved me too. My tears would not stop flowing.  At the time, I didn’t know where that feeling came from but now I believe God’s Spirit had something to do with it. That day is definitely up there in my list of “Best Days in My Life.”

Me with Mom, just bumming around on a remote island near Iloilo. We were in town because of a fashion show...

Me with Mom, just bumming around on a remote island near Iloilo. We were in town because of a fashion show…

Years after this, I was asked to share my testimony at church and I talked about my old bitterness against Mom. In the middle of that testimony, I blurted this out without thinking: “Mom was right. I was not meant to be a doctor. I was meant to be a beauty queen. Besides, there are so many doctors out there, pero iilan lang ang Bb. Pilipinas winners!”

(To all you wonderful Doctors reading this, please don’t ban me from your clinics, I can’t live without you, aahaha!)

So to my Mom, on Mother’s Day, I am thankful that YOU are my Mom!

Without your pushing and prodding, I would not be enjoying the beauty queen life I have today! So, for all the heartaches I caused you, I ask for your forgiveness…

I was recently asked why I never joined any of the pageants for married women and moms since I still ‘have what it takes’ daw and I suddenly realized that it was because you aren’t here to be the wind beneath my wings. How could I join any pageant without you behind me? It just wouldn’t be the same. I know I am a grown woman but I still look to you for strength. Up to now, you are my Top Model because you are an outrageously crazy, terribly brave, amazingly tough and wonderfully beautiful woman!

Always remember that the crown that I wear truly belongs to you. I love you!

Happy Mother's Day Mom! I love you!!!

Beauty Queens at the Birthday Party of Mama Renee Salud!

Dear readers:

OMG, I think this has been the longest silence from ABQ ever! I haven’t posted anything in weeks! I do hope you will forgive me for I was abroad with family and devoted all my time to loved ones. But I’m back with a few stories up my sleeve. The first one (for 2014) being the birthday party of our dearest Mama Renee Salud – the wo/man responsible for the careers of many a beauty queen.

Here are photos and stories of what transpired at the lovely affair…

Mama Renee Salud! Happy Birthday, we love you!!!

Mama Renee Salud! Happy Birthday, we love you!!!

As expected, the birthday celebrant, Mama Renee Salud showed up fashionably late! He was in high spirits (as usual) and was all smiles. The past year has been an extremely good one for the beauty-queen maker and haute-couture designer. His two winners in Mutya ng Pilipinas 2013 – Koreen Medina and Angeli Dione Gomez both performed well in their respective pageants with Koreen placing 4th in the Miss Intercontinental 2013 and Angeli Dione winning the crown in the Miss Tourism International 2013 spelling a back-to-back win for the Philippines which won the crown first in 2012 via Rizzini Gomez.

But his major coup in 2013 was the victory of Bea Santiago in the Miss International 2013 giving the Philippines it’s 5th crown in that franchise!

I arrived promptly at 7:30 and found two early birds who were ahead of me. My dear friend Izza Gonzales who won the Maja title during my year in Bb. Pilipinas (1985) and the effervescent Dang Cecilio who glowed like a debutante!

Izza, for your information, is a serious Yoga enthusiast. She has been attending Bikram Yoga classes for 8 years now and only takes Sundays off from class! This must be the reason why she still can wear classy shorts and show off her slim and shapely legs!

Dang meantime is hoping to organize all the “Queens of Renee Salud” for charity projects. She believes that once you’ve achieved success, then it’s time to share your bounty and serve others!

Another early bird at the party was Marina Benipayo. I have known her for years and even worked with her in fashion shows during her early years as a beauty queen and model. But it was only at this party that I found out she and I had something in common – we were both pet lovers! She showed us photos of her gorgeous cat KittyKat (I think that’s her name if I remember correctly, haha!) and her Siberian Hamsters. I too adore hamsters and had a beautiful cream colored hammie named Mariel some five or six years ago.

Gladys Duenas arrived and brought along with her her gorgeous smile. There’s just something about this lady that is SO appealing! She is now based in Cebu, where her hubby is from, but keeps a place in Metro Manila for times when she is in town, like now!

A light moment at the party. There's Sharon Hughes in pink!

There’s Sharon Hughes in pink! She was also an early bird at the party. But she did not look like she gained an ounce over the holidays; she was slim as ever! Just like the fitness-conscious Izza Gonzales, Sharon takes her health seriously and works out regularly at Gold’s gym.

Golly, Peachie Sacasas looks so fresh! Like a summer peach! We both go to the same church -Union Church of Manila (which is in Makati) but rarely get to talk after service since we’re always rushing off to do family things. But at Mama Renee’s party we had more time to chat about our kids and joys that come with parenting. However, unlike the empty-nester that I am, she’s still raising a couple teenagers! How I envy her and wish I could turn the hands of time back to when my children were still wee ones…

Love you Mama!

Love you Mama!

I can’t wait for Mama Renee and company to start the search for this year’s contestants in Mutya ng Pilipinas! He says screening is supposed to begin in June or July which is still months away. I had the chance to participate in last year’s screening and I hope to be part of it again this year. The big question though is this: Will Mutya ng Pilipinas be able to find winners who can match or at least come close to the achievements of last year’s queens Koreen Medina and Angeli Dione Gomez? Abangan!

Patty Betita was as bubbly as a glass of champagne when she arrived at the party! She’s still busy as a speaker and consultant in corporate image.

There’s Gionna Cabrera in the middle! And in typical Gionna fashion, she was generous with her compliments to me and all the other queens. The interesting thing about Gionna and me is that we are always bumping into each other. Last year I think I bumped into her three or four times in the Fort area. Anyway, did you know that Gionna is  serious foodie? She took some time out to ask me for a quick review of the party venue Brazil (I told her that the food was great but the ambiance felt tired) and asked the waiter to show her the bottle of wine that they were serving and after she saw it Gionna said it was a good table wine. Coooool…

Although I didn’t get to chat with the stylish Lou Bunyi, I was able to get this lovely smile from her on my phone camera.

Mama Renee’s party was held at ‘Brazil’ the buffet restaurant at Serendra, The Fort

I have known about Brazil for years now, ever since it opened in Serendra but it was only now that I got a chance to visit the restaurant. What can I say about the food? Loved it! One of my biggest problems when it comes to restaurants is if they have meals that I can eat since I eat carefully and avoid processed carbs and sugar. Well, Brazil had options for me – a chicken dish, tons of fresh lettuce from the salad bar, a seafood dish, chicken bbq and cuttlefish bbq. The queens loved the roasted bananas and pineapple but I had to keep away from the fruit since I only eat fruit until 2pm. The only thing I didn’t like about the place was that it felt tired. Perhaps they need a renovation to spice things up?

At one point during the party, Dang Cecilio suggested that all the queens of Renee get together and do charity projects every quarter or twice a year. I sincerely hope that we can get organized and mobilized to do this! Can’t wait for our first meeting!

We spent the whole night chatting, telling stories, eating and laughing our hearts out!

We spent the whole night chatting, telling stories, eating and laughing our hearts out!

One of the topics that came up at the party was a coffee table book featuring the queens of Mama Renee Salud. If you look at the list of beauties that Renee has discovered – Chiqui Brosas, Melanie Marquez, Chat Silayan, Desiree Verdadero, Bong Dimayacyac… to name a few – then you’ll see that such a book might be worth considering. If the project did come to fruition do you think it would sell? I think so! But then again, I am biased, aahahaaha!

Why only one candle LOL!

Why only one candle LOL!

I had to leave after the blowing of the candles on Mama Renee’s cake. This beauty queen needed her beauty sleep and was the first one to leave the party. Since I returned from the US, my sleeping pattern has shifted to waking up at 4 or 5 am. It’s actually a good thing that I hope to make a habit. My brain seems to work better in the mornings after a good night’s sleep.

Anyhoo… it was a lovely evening with all the queens of Renee Salud… good food, warm smiles, lots of stories and tons of laughter! Praying for another winning year for Mama Renee, may you always seek beauty and find it!

Happy Birthday Mama Renee Salud!!!

Pilipinas 2013’s show time, enjoy these photos!
